tldr; it’s possible to automatically follow users on Carousell and get more views on your products and (hopefully) more purchases. You can also extrapolate the procedure to any platform you want to grow an audience rapidly on.

In this article we’ll go through the procedure to setup an auto-follow script for a marketplace app in Singapore called Carousell as well as describe how we could extrapolate this to any platform where we want to grow an audience.

Carousell is a marketplace in South East Asia for selling and buying products from other people, very similar to Gumtree for those in Australia or UK or eBay in the US. While its target is P2P, many small businesses use it as a platform to sell their products. For these businesses, getting noticed on the platform can be quite tough with the huge amount of products already out there.

Carousell has two features for getting your products to the top, spotlight and bumps. Spotlight pushes products to the top where the user’s search term matches and your product would otherwise be towards the bottom of the search results. Bump does something similar for when the user isn’t searching. While these paid features help, the cost can add up and how to actually get your product consistently to the top of listings for different search terms is still a mystery.
